Yavapai Elementary Entry

The idea behind the entry landscape design at Yavapai Elementary, located in Scottsdale, Arizona, was to create a space that allows for students to become actively engaged in growing food, learning about their environment, and to become involved in aspects of construction and sustainability. Due to financial constraints and through an exploration into more sustainable ways to using recycled materials, broken slabs of urbanite from the existing sidewalks were chosen to be used as the primary paving material. The students will become involved in the construction process through Cast-in-place amorphous sitting slabs that will be constructed in-situ and have objects and hand prints chosen by the students and staff. Through this intervention, the entry now takes on new meaning by becoming a threshold that links general education to the students' environment.
